My name is Paul McGuire and I am a hop addict. (Oh, I thought this was Hop Addicts Anonymous) I blog here so that I can give you the detailed descriptions of local beer that aren’t always provided by the breweries. Some breweries think it is enough to call something an IPA. I dig a bit deeper to explain which beers are heavier on the malts, and which beers are on the lighter floral/citrus side.
Lately I have focused on reviews of individual breweries both in San Diego and all around the United States where my travels take me. I’ve even written blog posts about the craft beer scene in Mexico, Italy, Germany, Prague, Japan, and The Philippines.
This blog was created out of my passion for local craft beer. With so many choices in San Diego, I can’t help but hit at least one brewery each week, sometimes more. I hope that my readers will discover new breweries and also contribute by sharing their favorites. After all, it would be hard to include a note about each beer at most breweries because there are so many to choose from. I also write reviews of specialty beers available in the liquor store whether from local breweries or those around the country. If it comes down to San Diego and looks fresh and interesting, I’ll check it out.
I love IPAs mostly but I appreciate a variety of beers as you will see on here. I am open to trying everything because a well-crafted beer of any style is better than a boring IPA (or one that is too malty or made with more earthy hops). I occasionally enjoy a stout or porter when it is done right, though usually I taste the stouts and porters so I know where to bring my husband along. He does not like hops in his beers so I won’t waste his time taking him to a place that doesn’t have a good stout or porter. I recently became interested in sours and beers brewed with wild yeast, so you will see more of a focus on those.
In my day job, I am a LGBT friendly family law attorney serving San Diego County. You can follow me on twitter at @pdmcguirelaw. I am also on Instagram as sdhopaddict and the same on Untapped. If you met me at a brewery and want to get in touch, Twitter is the best but all 3 work fine.
To keep my figure while enjoying all these beers, I enjoy biking, hiking, and running all around San Diego with my husband. Look for me on the trails and say hi.
